Cambridge Guide:
Cambridge is a very popular cosmopolitan city of the UK, owing especially to the grand status of the university it is home to, as well as the river Cam. It is not only compact and walkable, but also brilliant in that the architecture is both old and modern, keeping the scenery varied and interesting. There is a lot to see and do so it makes sense to visit for a few days. It is only some 20 minutes from London Stansted Airport and 50 minutes from Central London, meaning that day trips are another possibility.
Things to see and do in Cambridge
Visit the Fitzwilliam Museum which is well known throughout Europe as one of the greatest treasure houses where a range of items are contained, such as Egyptian antiquities, ceramics and Graeco-Roman armour and glass. A great inspiration for children is the Sedgwick Museum, which emphasises its displays on dinosaurs and totem poles. The Folk Museum has also been refurbished in recent times and its exhibits are based around city and rural life. It is also possible to visit the Imperial War Museum, which is one of the largest air museums in the world. It can be found just outside of Cambridge in Duxford.
Towards the south of the city centre are the famous University Botanic Gardens, which feature large glasshouses which are divided into climatic regions such as Alpine and Tropical. There is also a lake strewn with water lilies, always a beautiful sight, and a Winter Garden which is colourful to the maximum. Another interesting visit can be made to Parker’s Piece, which is a large open ground often used for informal sports, summer fairs and events as well as music programmes. If you wish to spot some wildlife or simply take a walk or have a picnic along the riverside, visit Lammas Land, Coe Fen or Sheeps Green which are the perfect spots for these activities.
The shopping scene is immaculate here in Cambridge, from designer outlets to quirky stalls and cafes and restaurants as well. The central point for shopping is the market square in the city centre where a market is set up every day of the week. If you wish to explore some independent and national outlets, take a walk along the market and to the Grafton shopping centre, where you will find an abundance of shops located along the way. For the more unique outlets, visit the historic centre with its small lanes and alleyways of the likes of Green Street, King Street and Rose Crescent, where small independent shops can be found. The Grand Arcade is another option, one of the largest of town shopping locations which parallels the shopping in London.
